Long ago, the ten sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten scorching suns that cause the Earth to burn terribly.
Chang’e and her husband are immortals living in heaven. The Jade Emperor summoned Houyi as he is known for his legendary archery skills. Houyi shot down nine of the sons but spared one son to be the sun to warm the Earth. The Jade Emperor was furious and unhappy that his nine sons were dead.
As punishment, Chang’e and Houyi were banished to live as mortals on Earth.
Chang’e was very miserable over her loss of immortality. Houyi decided to find the Pill of immortality so that the couple could become immortals again. He went on a long and perilous quest and at the end of the quest he meets the Queen Mother of the West who agreed to give him the pill upon hearing his story. She warned him that each person only needs half of the pill to become immortal.
Houyi bright the pill home and stored it in a safe case. He warned his wife Chang’e not to open the case as went on his hunt.Chang’e became very curious. She opened the case and found the pill of immortality. Upon Houyi return, she grew anxious so she accidentally swallow the entire pill. She started to float into the sky. Houyi wanted to shoot her to keep her from floating but he did not bear to aim an arrow at his wife.
Chang’e kept floating until she landed on the moon. Chang’e became an immortal and lived on the moon. She is known as the Moon Goddess and Houyi remained a mortal and stayed on Earth.
